Incremental Generation with Categorial Grammar and HPSG
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper describes an approach to generation with HPSG based on earlier work with categorial grammar. We show that a non-incremental generation algorithm for categorial grammar and indexed logical form can easily be adapted for use with HPSG and MinimalRecursion Semantics. However, if the algorithm is modiied to support incremental generation, diierent notions of syntactic constituency become signiicant. Incomplete utterances which can be valid constituents in categorial grammar are non-constituents in HPSG. Nevertheless this apparent weakness in HPSG is not real, as the incomplete utterances can be produced from active edges in the chart. In fact, it is information structure, not syntactic structure, which drives incremental utterances.

Approaches to Surface Realization with HPSG
HPSG is widely used in theoretical and computational linguistics, but rarely in natural language generation. The paper describes some approaches to surface realization in which HPSG can be used. The implementation of all the approaches combines generation algorithms in Prolog and HPSG grammars in ProFIT. It is natural to combine a head-driven HPSG grammar with a head-driven generation algorithm...
متن کاملIncremental Interpretation of Categorial Grammar
The paper describes a parser for Categorial Grammar which provides fully word by word incremental interpretation. The parser does not require fragments of sentences to form constituents, and thereby avoids problems of spurious ambiguity. The paper includes a brief discussion of the relationship between basic Categorial Grammar and other formalisms such as HPSG, Dependency Grammar and the Lambek...
متن کاملType-inheritance Combinatory Categorial Grammar
In this paper I outline Type-inheritance Combinatory Categorial Grammar (TCCG), an implemented feature structure based CCG fragment of English. TCCG combines the fully lexical nature of CCG with the type-inheritance hierarchies and complex feature structures of Headdriven Phrase Structure Grammars (HPSG). The result is a CCG/HPSG hybrid that combines linguistic generalizations previously only s...
متن کاملBidirectional Incremental Generation and Analysis with Categorial Grammar and Indexed Quasi-Logical Form
We describe an approach to surface generation designed for a "pragmatics-based" dialogue system. The implementation has been extended to deal with certain well-known difficulties with the underlying linguistic formalism (Categorial Grammar) at the same time yielding a system capable of supporting incremental generation as well as interpretation. Aspects of the formalism used for the initial des...
متن کاملGeneralizing Dimensionality in Combinatory Categorial Grammar
We extend Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) with a generalized notion of multidimensional sign, inspired by the types of representations found in constraint-based frameworks like HPSG or LFG. The generalized sign allows multiple levels to share information, but only in a resource-bounded way through a very restricted indexation mechanism. This improves representational perspicuity without in...
